Calaverite

AuTe2

This sample of calaverite is displayed in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Calaverite is a compound of gold and tellurium with the composition AuTe2. The sample at left is about 8 cm across and is from Doctor mine, Cripple Creek, Colorado.

The mineral krennerite has the same empirical formula AuTe2. These two minerals are said to be dimorphs of each other.
